Why Your New Year’s Resolutions Aren’t Sticking and What to Do About It

How are your New Year’s resolutions going?

Fun fact: most resolutions, goals, and intentions don’t make it past the first two weeks of January. Why? Because the energy for starting new things simply isn’t there yet.

Here’s what’s really going on and how you can set yourself up for success by aligning with both external and internal energy cycles.

The Misaligned Calendar

Our modern calendar starts the year in January, but this wasn’t always the case. Ancient civilizations aligned their calendars with natural cycles like the seasons of growth and harvest. The January 1st start date was adopted for political and religious reasons and later integrated into corporate business planning.

This works well for large corporations, which can function like machines, powered by many individuals working in shifts. But for soul-led entrepreneurs, this is an unsustainable model. Small business owners need rest and integration in order to thrive. Trying to maintain a “summer energy” of production year-round with a corporate model leads to burnout.

Nature’s Seasonal Cycles and Your Energy Flow

Nature moves through a predictable cycle each year:

Spring: New life emerges, bringing renewed energy and curiosity.

Summer: Growth and playful expansion thrive.

Autumn: Transformation and collaboration are necessary.

Winter: A quieter season for rest, celebration, and renewal.

Humans experience similar cycles, but not always in sync with the calendar year. Astrology offers a powerful framework for understanding when your personal seasons of energy occur.

Let’s break it down:

January (Capricorn Season): We’re in the 10th house of the astrological year. In the Charting Your Course system, I call this the “House of Reputation.” It is a time to celebrate past successes and reflect on the journey, not set new goals. Setting new goals at this time is like traveling a far distance to arrive at a party to immediately leave again for the next without first enjoying where you are.

February (Aquarius Season): The 11th house, or the “House of Innovation,” is the best time for brainstorming and charting your course for the year ahead. You are most supported by external energies to envision the future at this point of the year. I find that many people crave vacation around this time of the year which is beautifullly aligned. Use this time to envision and document what you’re inspired to create moving forward.

Let your vacation be practice for the life you are creating rather than an escape from the life you have.

March (Pisces Season): The 12th house, or the “House of Actualization,” is for integrating the past year’s insights, solidifying your vision, and resting. The astrological seasons and likewise the houses actually span two months beginning and ending at the midpoint. So late February into early March is the timeframe here. This is where you fortify the vision you experienced in the 11th house and start dreaming it into being.

Spring (Aries Season): The astrological new year begins on March 21, bringing the energy of new beginnings and action. This is where you take the physical steps of aligned action to begin building the habits necessary for success.

Why Some People Succeed in January

Those who successfully stick to resolutions in January often have one (or more) of these three things true for them:

1. The timing of their internal energy cycle aligns with taking action at the start of the calendar year.

2. They’ve conditioned themselves to operate against their natural flow. Often a hard earned path leading to an ever present dance with burnout.

3. They’ve built supportive systems that enable them to optimize productivity while staying aligned with their energy flow. What you see as the consumer or client is the result of them optimizing their supportive systems to allow them to thrive in their natural flow year round.

If you feel out of sync, don’t worry—you’re not doing anything wrong. You just need to tune into your natural rhythm and align your goals with the timing of your personal and external energy cycles.
